With Donald Trump’s election as the 47th president, America’s foundational ideals face significant challenges. The vision of a nation governed by the will of the people, where freedom of speech and press are protected, and the judicial system applies equally to all, appears under threat. Rather than casting their ballots to strengthen democracy, a majority of voters have chosen a path that many fear could undermine it. In this new political landscape, the guiding principles on which the nation was built feel diminished.
The future outlook raises serious concerns. There is a real possibility that recent advancements in human rights, such as protections for peaceful assembly, women’s reproductive rights, and civil rights provisions, could be reconsidered. President-elect Trump has also expressed support for Christian nationalism, which challenges the traditional separation of church and state. He has hinted at measures, like using the military domestically, that break with historical precedent. He has even suggested he may resist stepping down after his term. Additionally, with Trump in office, the Supreme Court, already facing low public approval, may take a more activist stance.
Dissent may face new challenges as well. Reflecting on history, there are lessons from totalitarian regimes like Nazi Germany, where only a few brave citizens stood in opposition. Dissent in such climates is perilous, and those who resist may face serious consequences. Under a concentrated executive and judicial influence, checks and balances may weaken.
In terms of hope, the upcoming midterm elections offer an opportunity to regain balance in Congress. Reclaiming the House or Senate could provide a crucial counterweight. But for now, the direction set by this election will shape the country profoundly. To those who voted for Trump, there is a reminder from scripture: “As you sow, so shall you reap.”
